April 2017 Meeting

April 14, 2017

Tuesday, April 18, 2017
OSMT Meeting – Location: Cheekwood

7 pm Presentation: John Cranshaw — “Leafless Orchid Species of the World” (Refreshments at 6:30 pm)

Location: Cheekwood Botanical Gardens – directions, 1200 Forrest Park Drive Nashville Tennessee 37205

Please join us for a lively presentation by John Cranshaw on leafless epiphytes in the world. John will share his in-depth knowledge on the Ghost Orchids of Florida, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. Ghost Orchids are the most famous orchids from FL having been made popular by the book The Orchid Thief.

Botanically this orchid is one of 3 leafless orchids, all part of the Angraecoid group, which is part of the broader Vanda-Phalaenopolis group. These orchids are extremely fascinating and rare despite their popularity – in fact, many have yet to be discovered or named. John will also spend time discussing conservation of the orchids specifically in the wild.

He will also spend time discussing the Chiloschista family of orchids originating in Indonesia.
