Castilleja scabrida is a dicot in the Scrophulariaceae family. A native to the Four Corners area and west to Nevada. The common name is Rough Indian Paintbrush. It grows to only 8 inches tall and usually shorter than 8 inches. It will clump out a few feet wide in suitable growing conditions. The narrow green leaves are a wonderful backdrop for the bright red shoots. It reminds me of Christmas. Some of the stems are green, and some are purple.
