“COOL BEANS n SPROUTS” Brand All about your Microgreens ! To reap the health benefits of microgreens, eat them immediately after harvest. Microgreens, like most other superfoods that are consumed fresh, begin to lose their nutritional value rapidly after harvest. Consider growing your own microgreens at home as this will allow you to decide exactly when you harvest your crop. Another way to boost the nutritional value of recipes made with microgreens is to use extra-virgin olive oil or another healthy oil. The presence of oil helps improve the bioavailability of the fat-soluble nutrients in microgreens. Some people use glass jars to grow their sprouts. If you already have a glass jar and don’t plan on growing a bunch of sprouts at once, you can use this technique and just get a plastic lid that is designed to fit on wide-mouthed glass jars – specifically for growing sprouts. A mason Jar also works. Between “sprouting sessions” you will need to clean and sanitize your sprouting jar. Be careful not to leave any soap or residue in the jar, as this can inhibit the growth of your next batch of sprouts. First, soak your seeds in a Vinegar and water solution, for 15 minutes to kill any harmful bacteria. Rinse well and soak the seeds in plain water overnight. The next morning, drain the seeds and place them in a mason jar. There are mesh lids made just for sprouting, or you can just replace the center part of the mason jar lid with cheesecloth or loosely woven muslin to allow air to circulate and excess water to drain. One to Twice daily, rinse and drain the seeds, placing your jar upside down within a bowl or tray to catch drainage. Within about 5 days, you can expect plump and flavorful sprouts. On the last day, place them in in a bright area, (not direct sun), being very careful not to let them dry out. This allows chlorophyll to form, which will cause them to become that healthful green color. Can also be started indoors 8-10 weeks before the final frost date.Where to Plant Foxglove SeedsFoxglove prefers Full Sun, but can tolerate Partial Shade conditions. In warmer climates, Partial Shade can be preferable. Choose an area with some wind protection, as regular wind exposure can impact the growth pattern. How to Plant Foxglove SeedsThe first step is to cold stratify your seeds. Then, moisten soil and hand scatter seeds onto the surface approximately every 12-18 inches, and compress seeds onto the surface. Do not cover the seeds, as they require sunlight in order to germinate. Once seedlings develop two or more leaves, thin growth back to every 12-18 inches. Choose rich, loamy, well-draining soil that’s slightly acidic – you may wish to Amend with organic matter as well. How to Care for Foxglove SeedsAfter your plants have established, add a layer of mulch in order to aid in retaining moisture. You can leave this mulch overwinter as well to insulate the roots for the following season as well. As a tall-grower, Foxglove will likely need staking. If you want your Foxglove to self sow, be sure not to deadhead your flowers when they’re spent.HOW TO COLD STRATIFY YOUR SEEDSStratification of seeds is the process of exposing seeds to cold conditions in order to encourage germination. The exact process you choose (there are two options) depends on the flower variety you’re growing. Let us explain! The different processes are defined below.Cold Stratification Planting in FallIf time is not a problem, nature itself can cold stratify your seeds. Just place them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, the flowers will return and bloom as expected. Some varieties like poppies and coneflowers will bloom the first year.Creating a False WinterThe second way to cold stratify seeds (especially if you want to save time!) is to create a false winter. This method tricks the seeds into thinking they have been in the cold ground, when they’ve actually been chilling in your refrigerator. The refrigeration times will vary by variety, so check the planting guide for your seed before beginning. Before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened clean peat, paper towels, or a mix of clean peat and sand. Seal and label the bag with your seed name and the date, then store the bag in the refrigerator (not freezer!) before planting in spring. Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives.Cold Moist Stratification In this technique, you simply add a small step to the process of creating a false winter—add moisture! The method involves dampening the seeds to soften them and allowing them to absorb water. The moisture helps spark germination. Place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened clean peat, paper towels, or a mix of clean peat and sand. You don’t want the seeds to be dripping wet! Place the bag in the refrigerator. The length of time it remains cold will vary depending on the variety of seed, so be sure to check planting guides for specific timeframes. Frequently check the bag for mold or fungus. If any are present, plant your seeds right away.WE SHIP FAST & FREE!Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. NO TRACKING. They do well in many climates and sun conditions, but they will bloom best in full sun to light shade. Plus, columbines are deer resistant, and birds and butterflies love the nectar found in tip of the petal’s thin spur!HOW TO PLANT COLUMBINE SEEDS: For best results, put columbine seeds in the refrigerator for 24 hours prior to planting. Another, slightly more intensive way to stratify (a process of breaking seeds’ dormancy by subjecting them to moist/cold treatments) your seeds is to first, sow them into a container filled with moist soil. Next, place the container in a plastic bag and refrigerate or freeze it for 3 weeks. Finally, remove the seeds, and place them outdoors in a sunny location or under grow lights and allow them to germinate (21 to 28 days). If sowing outdoors: In the early spring (3 to 4 weeks before the last frost), sow your columbine seeds on top of lightly raked soil. They do not need to be covered. Your columbine seeds will germinate in around 21 days.If starting indoors, plant columbine seeds 6 weeks before the average last spring frost.Columbines are perennials that are hardy to zones 3 to 8 or 9, depending on variety.HOW TO CARE FOR COLUMBINE: When flowers begin to fade, dead head to allow for fresh blooms. When the season is over, cut down to the ground.HOW TO COLD STRATIFY SEEDSEveryone wants plants. Now. But there are a small group of seeds that require a special treatment before they will even germinate in a climate that has temperatures below freezing. This process is called “Cold Stratification.” There are two ways to accomplish this.Fall PlantingIf time is not a problem, you can put them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, they will return and bloom as expected. If you are planting poppies direct sowing is recommended in late fall or early spring for zones 2-8Create a “False Winter”The second way to do this, if you want to save time, is to create a “false winter.” What this does is trick the seeds into thinking they have been in the ground for an entire year. All they need is to be in your refrigerator for at least 2 ½ months.About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand.Seal and label the bag with seed name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 2½ mos. before planting in spring. (The cold period mimics a full winter’s cold.) Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives.WE SHIP FAST & FREE!Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. NO TRACKING. Logan’s Leafy Greens Mix Seeds for Sprouting microgreens, Arugula, Curled Cress.
“COOL BEANS n SPROUTS” Brand All about your Microgreens ! To reap the health benefits of microgreens, eat them immediately after harvest. Microgreens, like most other superfoods that are consumed fresh, begin to lose their nutritional value rapidly after harvest. Consider growing your own microgreens at home as this will allow you to decide exactly when you harvest your crop.Another way to boost the nutritional value of recipes made with microgreens is to use extra-virgin olive oil or another healthy oil. The presence of oil helps improve the bioavailability of the fat-soluble nutrients in microgreens (carotenoids, vitamin E, and vitamin K). God Bless Arugula,Curled Cress, Cabbage, Mustard Green . This mix was inspired by my son Logan. Cress Seeds for Sprouting Microgreens, “COOL BEANS N SPROUTS” Brand
“COOL BEANS N SPROUTS” Brand. All about your Cress Microgreen! Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are approximately 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm) tall. They have an aromatic flavor and concentrated nutrient content and come in a variety of colors and textures. Microgreens are considered baby plants, falling somewhere between a sprout and baby green. Cress is a popular microgreen due to how easy it is to grow and the fact that it’s one of the most nutrient-dense greens out there. It even beats the Almighty Kale in terms of nutrient density according to the USDA. The peppery taste and unique leaf structure make it a chef favorite, used in soups, salads, and garnishes. For the home cook, cress is great for juicing, smoothies, or as an addition to a salad mix to add some extra spice. Unlike many greens, cress seeds are mucilaginous. This means that they’ll take in water and form a mucus membrane around their hulls, so they don’t need as much water when germinating as other seeds. Spray them very lightly, and make sure your soil mixture isn’t too moist. You’ll have low germination rates if you use too much water. After 3-4 days, your cress seeds will be sprouted and will be ready for some light. Make sure you continue to water, but do not overwater your cress. You’ll get mold and potentially drown out the fragile root systems, leading to either rot or just a poor yield! For cress, you’ll want to harvest around the 8-12 day mark. Make sure your greens are as dry as possible when harvesting as any moisture on them when storing is conducive to mold and rot. If they’re a bit moist, lay them out on a drying rack or towel until dry. Turns out microgreens are not just a plain good-for-you food or a healthy garnish on salads and soups. Long blooming perennial pollinator attractor Heirloom variety with long lasting, white summer blooms Thrives in bright, sunny growing areas Monarch populations have been in decline for a number of years, and the loss of nectar sources and milkweeds has been indicated as a major contributor to these declines. Crisp blooms atop lush foliage are a sight to behold all on their own, but once they begin to attract bright and beautiful butterflies to your yard, we’re sure that Milkweed will become an instant favorite! Cold stratification is very important for the germination and growth of Milkweed. It helps break the seeds natural dormancy cycle. To do this, we recommend placing Milkweed seed in a damp paper towel or damp sand in a zip lock bag and place in your fridge for 3 – 6 weeks (30 days). Place in an area of the fridge, where it won’t get damaged. We taped ours to the bottom of a refrigerator shelf.Growing IndoorsPlanting In Spring: Once the 30 days are complete, it’s time to plant the cold stratified Milkweed (asclepias) seeds. We recommend planting in 2-4” peat pots. Fill peat pots ¾ of the way with seed starting potting soil and gently add water. Water should be able to drain through the peat pots. Once the soil is damp, place 1-2 cold stratified seeds into each pot. To finish, place 1/4 inch of soil on top of the seed.Planting In Fall: If you’re planting Milkweed seed in the fall, let nature do the cold stratification for you! There is no need to place your seeds in the refrigerator before planting, you can plant seeds directly into the soil after there have been a few frosts in your area. This allows for the seeds to remain dormant for the winter and come up in the early spring. Clear away any existing growth and using your index finger to measure, create 1.5″ holes for each Milkweed seed. We recommend spacing seeds about 4-6” apart. Place a seed in each hole and cover. Water thoroughly.Watering: Gently water the planted seed to give additional hydration. The best way to water is from the bottom up. Use a flat pan under the peat pots and add a half inch of water to the bottom of the tray. Don’t over water as it can cause fungus. Water every day or every other day as needed, the best way to test the soil dampness is to touch it. If the soil seems dry then add water; if it’s wet, wait for the soil to dry out to water.Light Requirements: For the next few weeks, make sure the Milkweed is either in a sunny window, in a green house or under a grow light. Milkweed needs lots of sun and warmth to grow. If you’re using a grow light, make sure to lower the bulb closer to the pots or your seedlings may become leggy, as they stretch to the light. In our experiment, this happened to us. Ideally a sturdier stem is better. Cold stratified seeds should germinate and sprout within 10-15 days once planted. In total Milkweed from the day they are cold stratified to growth can take 40 plus days, so be patient!Other planting options: Place dry seed (not stratified) in seed starting soil and plant in peat pots under a grow light or in a greenhouse to germinate seeds. The success rate for this is low and more difficult to accomplish. If you choose to use this option it can take months for the seeds to germinate. If you are planting seed outside, we suggest seeding in late fall, and let the Milkweed seed lay on the ground through winter. Milkweed seed will have a long winter of dormancy, so once the sun comes out and the ground warms in the spring, the seeds will germinate on their own.SEED STORING Store your seeds in a cool, dry and dark location. Adzuki Bean “COOL BEANS n SPROUTS” Brand. – Microgreen- Home Garden
“COOL BEANS n SPROUTS” brand- Adzuki Bean Sprouting Seeds. Adzuki beans sprout into large shoots with a beautiful maroon color, making them not only a beautiful, but also nutritious and delicious addition to salads, stir fries, sandwiches and more. Adzuki bean sprouts are rich in vitamins E, C, B and A as well as calcium and iron. How to Sprout Beans: A wide-mouth quart canning jar: pretty self-explanatory or a Seed Sprouter. Sprouting jar lid: This is a lid that fits on your canning jar and has a mesh screen in the center. (You will need to purchase this separately) You can make your own version with a canning ring and a piece of cheesecloth or mesh screen. Water: You’ll want a double or triple water to beans ratio. Pour about 1/2 cup of beans into a bowl of cold water (use at least 1 cup of water). Let soak for up to 24 hours. Pour your bean and water mixture into your canning jar. Place your sprouting lid on the jar. Rinse the beans twice with cool water, draining the excess water out of the screen. Place your jar on its side out of direct sunlight. Somewhere on your kitchen counter should be perfect. Rinse and drain your beans and sprouts a few times daily, being careful not to leave excess water in the jar. If you’re using a sprouting lid, you can just invert your jar to let the water drain out. Depending on your bean and your desired sprout length, the sprouting process will take from three to seven days. When the beans in your jar are all sprouted, place the jar on your window sill to get some direct sunlight. Leave it there for a few hours so the sprouts color up a bit. If you’re sprouting some of the tougher beans (like black beans) you may notice some of the skins have come off, this is normal. You can remove them or leave them in, it won’t affect the sprouted beans’ flavor. Store the jar of sprouts in the refrigerator for up to a week, continuing to rinse your sprouts at least once each day.
