In the Islands such as Jamaica where I lived for a number of years, the trees are used as a live edible fence providing both a boundary between properties as well as a delightful fruit/food source for everyone.

A hardy native ground cover, green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) is a great replacement for grass, or to fill in a bare area. It will spread over years and it out competes weeds. Produces dainty little yellow flowers in spring time. This is one of my favorite plants and is very easy to grow. Good for folks with a brown thumb!
