The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called sunroot, sunchoke, earth apple or topinambour, is a species of sunflower native to eastern North America, and found from eastern Canada and Maine west to North Dakota, and south to northern Florida and Texas. It is also cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable The flowers are yellow and produced in capitate flowerheads, which are 5?10 centimetres (2.0?3.9 in) in diameter, with 10?20 ray florets. The tubers are elongated and uneven, typically 7.5?10 centimetres (3.0?3.9 in) long and 3?5 centimetres (1.2?2.0 in) thick, and vaguely resembling ginger root, with a crisp texture when raw. They vary in color from pale brown to white, red, or purple. The artichoke contains about 10% protein, no oil, and a surprising lack of starch The tubers are sometimes used as a substitute for potatoes:they have a similar consistency, and in their raw form have a similar texture, but a sweeter, nuttier flavor; raw and sliced thinly, they are fit for a salad. In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, over 90% of the Jerusalem artichoke crop is used to produce a spirit called “Topinambur”, “Topi” or “Rossler”. By the end of the 19th-century Jerusalem artichokes were being used in Baden to make a spirit called “Jerusalem artichoke brandy,” “Jerusalem artichoke”, “Topi”, “Erdäpfler” “Rossler” or “Borbel.” Jerusalem artichoke brandy smells fruity and has a slight nutty-sweet flavour. It is characterised by an intense pleasing earthy note. The tubers are washed and dried in an oven before being fermented and distilled. It can be further refined to make “red rossler” by adding Common Tormentil, and other ingredients such as currants, to produce a somewhat bitter and astringent decoction. It is used as digestif as well as a remedy for diarrhea or abdominal pain. Site. Plant sunchokes in full sun. The sunchoke prefers loose, well-drained soil but will grow almost anywhere. Add aged compost or sand to planting beds before planting; loose soil will make tuber harvesting easier. The sunchoke prefers a soil pH from 5.8 to 6.2. It is best to set sunchokes in a dedicated bed; once established they will spread rapidly and may require some effort to remove. The sunchoke can be planted densely to form a screen or windbreak. Planting time. Sunchoke tubers can be planted in the garden as early as 2 to 3 weeks before the average last frost date in spring. They are best planted in soil that has warmed to 50°F. In warm-winter regions sunchokes can be planted in winter. Sunchokes require 110 to 150 days to reach harvest. Sunchokes grow best in temperatures ranging from 65° to 90°F. Planting and spacing. Plant sunchoke tubers 2 to 6 inches deep, 12 to 18 inches apart. Space rows 36 to rows inches apart. Water and feeding. Sunchokes grow best with an even, regular supply of water but can survive long periods of drought once established. Sunchokes require no extra feeding; they grow best in soil rich in organic matter. Companion plants. Corn, rhubarb, peanuts. Avoid planting sunchokes with tomatoes. Please enter the number of tubers desired before purchashing.

Store in a cool and dry location such as the refrigerator or basement to best preserve germination rates. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: Remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Till the soil 8-10 inches deep and rake several times to break up large clods. It is best to do this when the soil is dry enough to not stick to garden tools. Loosening the soil will help the plant establish strong roots. Planting: In the Spring, sow after all danger of frost has passed in loose, fertile, moist, well-draining soil in full sun when soil temperature is greater than 50F. In the Fall, plant 8-10 weeks before the first expected frost. Plant pea seeds 1 inch deep and 1 to 3 inches apart in the rows that are 2½ to 3 feet apart. Set a trellis or fence about 3-4 feet in height for the climbing tendrils. Planting in moist soil is best for seeds to germinate and emerge quickly. Planting Depth: 1 inch Within-Row Spacing: 3 inches Between-Row Spacing: 2 1/2-3 feet Care During the Season: Watering: Water the plants about once a week in dry weather. Try not to let the soil dry out while the peas are blooming or the blooms will drop and yields will be decreased. Weeding: The roots of beans grow near the soil surface. When hoeing and pulling weeds, try not to dig too deep to prevent the plant’s roots from damage. Fertilizing: As the plants begin to flower, you may optionally apply fertilizer by scattering between the rows about 1/2 cup of fertilizer for every 10 feet of row. Water the plants after fertilizing. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Diseases may be a possibility during cool, wet weather. If spots appear on leaves or bean pods, treat the plant with an approved fungicide. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides may be used. Harvesting: Pick young pods when they are full length, pods are plump, and a healthy green color. Peas left to mature too long on the vine can be fibrous or stringy. 1 Edible Aquatic Broadleaf Arrowhead 茨菇 Sagittaria Latifolia Water Garden Plant
Purchased orders will consist of one (1) Aquatic Broadleaf Arrowhead 茨菇 plant, scientifically known as Sagittaria Latifolia. All are healthy, hardy, and well rooted. They will be individually selected and carefully packed with moist paper towels to minimize dehydration during shipment and to ensure quality. Please see pictures for example. This aquatic perennial has unique arrowhead shaped leaves and can make a beautiful addition to your personal water garden. It naturally thrives in shallow water under full sun near lakes, rivers, tidal marshes, or wetland margins. Plus, the tubers at the end of the stem are edible and may be harvested underwater once a year after planting. Plant Care:After receiving plants in the mail, please grow aquatic arrowheads in a large pot using fully saturated soil containing a layer of water on top under full sun. Use a pot with no drainage holes at the bottom to contain the water. Plants will quickly multiply in a clumping manner. Gorgeous white flowers will typically bloom over the summer between July and September. The plant will then die back by fall, leaving large edible tubers ready for harvest underwater early winter during January. Leave smaller sized tubers behind for growing and they will rebloom the following planting season. Tubers may be enjoyed peeled and prepared by boiling, roasting, or stir frying. We provide fast shipping. All orders are manually packed with care and processed within the same or next business day we receive them. Feel free to contact us directly with any questions or concerns. Be sure to check our store regularly for updates on our newest inventory. Thank you for shopping!
