Castilleja latifolia is a perennial herb in the Orbanchaceae family. Known by its common name of Monterey Indian Paintbrush. This is endemic to the coastline of California from San Francisco to Monterey. It can be spotted in the Big Sur and Point Reyes areas growing in the dunes or scrub. It can grow to about a couple feet tall sprawling out to a bush once mature. The flower has layers of bracts green in color with the tips in orange, red, and yellow. It prefers to grow in sandy soil in full sun with good drainage.  Zones 4-10 Germination Rub seeds gently with sandpaper. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-70F. Germination is in 21-90 days.

Castilleja scabrida is a dicot in the Scrophulariaceae family. A native to the Four Corners area and west to Nevada. The common name is Rough Indian Paintbrush. It grows to only 8 inches tall and usually shorter than 8 inches. It will clump out a few feet wide in suitable growing conditions. The narrow green leaves are a wonderful backdrop for the bright red shoots. It reminds me of Christmas. Some of the stems are green, and some are purple. A native to Mexico and Belize. Common names include flat-leaved vanilla and West Indian vanilla. It is a primary source for vanilla flavoring. It prefers hot, wet, tropical climates for best results. It grows to around 75 feet once it matures in Mexico. It will only get 10-20 feet if in a container. The leaves are evergreen and succulent flat-bladed, around 5 inches long. It will require a structure to grow on. Flowers must be hand-pollinated if you want fruits. The bees that pollinate it are only in Mexico. The flowers are yellow-green and in an axillary cluster that has 10-20 flowers. The flowers will only last one day. It prefers to grow in part to full shade with daily misting and watering. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds in a 4% sodium hypochlorite or (bleach) solution for 90 minutes.  Sprinkle seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Lonicera caerulea is a deciduous shrub in the Caprifoliaceae family. A native to Asia, Europe, and North America. It is also called blue honeysuckle, sweet berry honeysuckle, fly honeysuckle, blue-berried honeysuckle, haskap, and honeyberry. The greyish-green leaves are slightly waxy. The flowers are a yellow-white color with 5 lobes and are produced in pairs. The edible fruits taste like blueberries a little. It is in bloom year-round in temperate climates. Shrubs are unisexual (not self-fertile). Compatible plants should be planted in pairs or groups in order for pollination and fruit set to occur. Many insects such as bees, birds, and butterflies will visit this one. It grows in most soil well-drained. Zones 2-8 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days.
