Spade the soil 8-10 inches deep and completely cover plant material. You may optionally scatter 1 cup of a complete fertilizer on the soil for each 10 feet of row to be planted. If soil has a lot of tight clay, you may optionally add compost after adding fertilizer and rake into top 4 inches of soil. Rake the soil until it is smooth and work the beds into 4-6-inch-tall raised ridges to allow soil to drain and let air enter soil. Planting: In southern states, swiss chard can be grown all winter. Soil temperature should be at least 50F for seeds to sprout. Use a hoe handle or stick to make a 1/2 inch furrow deep down the center of the ridge. Plant 1-2 seeds in the furrows spaced 12 inches apart within the rows. Cover lightly with loose soil then sprinkle with water. In hot weather, you may optionally cover seed with sands or light-colored mulch. Dypsis lutescens, also known as golden cane palm, areca palm, yellow palm, or butterfly palm, is a glorious species of flowering plant in the family Arecaceae, native to Madagascar and naturalized in many areas including south Florida. The Areca Palm is easily grown outside in tropical and subtropical regions. It flourishes in areas with sandy soil where water is ample and soil drainage is good. In such areas, it is most often grown in full sun but does quite well in part day sun or filtered light. In fact mine are greener, healthier and much more robust in only part sun. Full sun in Florida & other hot areas is just too hot in summer. Water regularly while letting the soil mix dry on the surface before watering again.
