Fresh cut hardwood logs should be used to prevent competitor fungi although it is best to allow the log to rest, off the ground after fresh cutting for 2-3 weeks prior to plugging. I sell custom drill bits with a stop collar that work for these and all standard mushroom plugs. The holes are then commonly sealed over with wax although some people have success without this step.
