XL Mylar Packet – Purple Giant Hyssop SeedsGold Vault Mylar Zip Packet Giant Hyssop grows wild across the central prairie regions of the United States and Canada. Native Americans used the rough, serrated leaves in poultices to relieve poison ivy rash, as well as brewing them for tea. A popular choice for planting in perennial gardens, it attracts bees and butterflies as well as small birds. As a cut flower, it performs very well; in Holland, research and development is under way to produce a hybrid of this variety especially suited for the cut flower industry. Giant hyssop can usually be found growing wild in meadows, along fences, or in deciduous woods and brush. Direct sow in the fall, pressing the seed into the surface of the soil. For spring planting, mix the seed with moist sand and store it in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting on the surface of the soil. To start indoors, plant on the surface of a flat with bottom heat of 70 degrees F and consistent moisture. Germination should take place within 6-10 days. As soon as the seedlings are big enough to handle and there is no chance of frost, they can be transplanted. These seeds are non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), and are also free from all Neonicotinoids. They are packaged in our superb Gold Mylar Mylar Zip Packaging, which gives the seeds the best storage possible, and allows you to reseal the bag for later use. Leaves may be brewed into a tea with soothing and medicinal properties for colds, flu, sore throat, bruises, and burns. Perennial. Fragrant, and attractive to bees, butterflies, and/or birds. Hyssop is a native of southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Historians cannot be sure if it is the same “hyssop” referred to in the Bible, but it has a long history of being a symbol of purification. Besides being used in the ritual cleansing of churches, hyssop was cultivated in monastery gardens and used to deter infection in sick rooms. Hyssop symbolized humility in medieval paintings, and its thick growth made it ideal for hedges, mazes, or traditional English knot gardens. Medicinally it provided treatment for coughs, cuts and wounds, bruises, and skin diseases. Old English country doctors often used a poultice of hyssop leaves and sugar as a protection against tetanus infection. Today hyssop grows mostly as an ornamental plant. These seeds are non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), and are also free from all Neonicotinoids. Helps digestion. Essential oil used in perfumery. Sowing:Direct sow on the surface of the soil in late fall or spring planting, mix the seed with moist sand or well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. To start the seed indoors, sow the seed on the surface of the soil in a flat; keep the soil temperature between 70-75 degrees F with consistent moisture until germination, which may take as long as 3-4 weeks. Growing:Do not over water, since this herb prefers slightly dry soil. Hyssop resists nearly all pests and disease. Before the spring growth, prune the plant heavily for healthy, tender new stems. Harvesting:Harvest leaves for fresh use as soon as they reach a desirable size. The best time for the harvesting is the morning after the dew has dried. Though both the leaves and flowers can be used as an herb or a flavoring, the flavor of the leaves is stronger than that of the flowers. Entire stalks can be harvested as soon as the flowers begin to open, and hung upside down to dry, they should be dried quickly and away from direct sunlight. Once dried, remove the leaves and flowers from the stem and store in an airtight container.
