About Banana Leaf Banana Leaf was developed from the original Orinoco type tobaccos, and is the oldest bright leaf variety known. It was the first of the many Virginian type bright leafs developed, and grows to 6 feet or more in height. It produces a narrow pointed leaf up to 30″ long and 14″ to 16″ wide. It matures in 55-60 days and gives good yields, with leaves ripening about 2 weeks after flowering. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Place commercial seedling compost into a tray and soak the soil with water and allow the excess water to drain off. Sprinkle the tobacco seeds onto the surface of the damp soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light for germination. Tobacco seeds are very tiny, so be careful to spread the seeds as evenly as possible. Keep the soil damp being careful not to wash the seeds around when you water; better still water from below or use a mist sprayer. At a temperature of 75-80 degrees, seeds typically take a matter of days to germinate; though at this stage they are still rather small. At lower temperatures, the germination simply takes a few days longer. Plantlets are ready to be transplanted into bigger pots, when the leaves are about 1cm in length. Care should be taken not to disturb the roots. Feed should only be given to established and rapidly growing plants after they have been replanted. Tobacco requires a lot of nitrogen and potash, which can be supplied using standard garden fertilizer. You may want to grow your tobacco using only organic fertilizers. Ideally, space the tobacco plants about 2 ft. apart in rows 3 ft. apart. Transplant outside in the evening or when it is cloudy and overcast to avoid the youngsters from drying out. Water plants thoroughly after transplanting and water daily until plants become established. Like tomato plants, the branches (suckers, offshoots), should be removed to focus the plants energy on the large leaves. Tobacco plants generally require full to partial sunlight to grow properly. Tobacco is ready to be harvest after 60-90 days after germinating.

It grows to over 7 feet in height. It is a late maturing type with blooms occurring at 90-95 days. The leaves turn a lemon yellow as they ripen and it is very easy to cure. The leaves air cure a light brown and produce a medium flavored mild smoke. Some growers report a slight mint or menthol taste, while others do not. This could be due to local soils or growing conditions. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Soapwort Seeds – Saponaria ocymoides Seeds – Beautiful Flowers!

Orders with 5 or more packets of any of the seeds we sell with free shipping will get a free upgrade to tracked shipping(Domestic Only). With its gorgeous pink blooms, this beloved wildflower can brighten up any space it inhabits. It spreads like a carpet, bringing joy wherever it grows, making it an excellent choice for a groundcover, edging plant, or container plant. Originally hailing from the mountains of the Mediterranean region and southwestern Asia, this hardy plant has been used for centuries in soap-making, hence the genus name “Saponaria” derived from the Latin word for soap. The plant’s ability to produce a gentle and cleansing lather is so impressive that there are even rumors of it being used for cleaning delicate museum pieces. It has been recognized for its excellence by the Royal Horticultural Society, receiving the coveted Award of Garden Merit. To sow these seeds, plant them directly in late fall by pressing them lightly into the soil, as they require light to germinate. For spring planting, simply sow them on the soil surface and keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually takes around 14-30 days. Alternatively, you can start the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the planting season and transplant them outside as soon as they have developed several leaves. Once your seedlings are established, water them regularly. This plant grows quickly and requires little care, thriving even in sandy or rocky soils and tolerating heat and drought well. Periodically cutting back the plant will encourage bushier growth. Bees and butterflies are attracted to this plant, and it makes an excellent ground cover, edging plant, or container plant. However, note that the blossoms do not fare well as cut flowers and are best enjoyed outdoors. To save the seeds, wait for the flowers to fade and small pods to form. When these pods open, shake them over a container to remove the seeds, being careful not to lose them in the wind. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place. If you don’t want the plant to self-seed, be sure to cut it back after flowering has finished.
Basma Tobacco – Nicotiana seeds (1000+ per packet)
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Turkish Basma has a distinct flavor and aroma that many cigarette and pipe smokers love. Basma is an excellent strain of Turkish oriental tobacco that is grown near the region of Turkey and Greece. It has a mild semi sweet flavor profile with the characteristic wonderful rich aroma of Turkish tobacco. Like many orientals it is low in nicotine (roughly 1%), easy to smoke and brings a very pleasant component to blends for cigarette, pipe, and hookah use. Due to its high sugar content and pleasant aroma, Basma was once very famous for its use in snuff and is still used in modern snuff and chewing tobacco mixes. Basma is smooth and flavorful enough to be enjoyed unblended as well. The goal with growing Basma, like many orientals, is to focus on leaf quality rather than yield. Basma is grown closer together and under drier conditions than most broadleaf tobaccos in order to achieve smaller leaves with stronger flavor profiles. Optimally, Basma should not be allowed to grow much taller than 5-5.5 feet in height and leaves should not get much larger than hand sized. Basma can get larger under good growth conditions but the leaf quality and flavor will decrease. Like many orientals, the lack of yield from an individual plant is made up for by having many more plants growing closer together in a given area. Plants can be grown closely spaced at 12 inches apart and kept under dry conditions (once established) to limit excessive growth. Basma is an excellent variety to grow in pots with a one gallon pot size being sufficient for a single plant. Basma is also topped with a cluster of beautiful pinkish trumpet shaped flowers which brings a note of beauty to the garden and is great at attracting hummingbirds. Basma is very hardy and will often start out larger and grow faster than many broadleaf varieties during the first few months. Basma is typically sun cured but can also be air cured although some of the sweeter notes will be lost. To sun cure, harvest the leaves and allow them to wilt for a day or two in the shade then place them in the sun until the leaves are uniformly light brown and dry (usually 3-5 days). Basma can be used immediately after sun curing, but will provide a smoother smoke if allowed to age for about a year. Basma is a good choice if you are after the quintessential Turkish oriental tobacco flavor and aroma. All my plants are grown in the USA and I do not use any non-organic pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. Seed is collected from individually bagged flower heads to ensure varietal purity.
