Plants form dense mats that create an excellent ground-cover. Creeping Thyme grows six to eight inches tall, and the lavender flowers appear just above the foliage. As with many species in the mint family, the flowers of Creeping Thyme attract many bees. Sowing: Direct sow creeping thyme seeds in early spring, planting just below the surface of the soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually occurs within 3-4 weeks. This plant can also be started indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost of spring.Growing: Water seedlings occasionally until they become established. Though they prefer average or slightly moist soil, mature plants tolerate drought and poor soil as well as rocky soil or gravel. This plant will self-seed readily, and attracts butterflies and bees. Being a native of the Mediterranean it needs a place in full sun. Thyme requires very little attention – water only in very dry conditions and feed sparingly. A good mulch with organic matter in October time will help protect them from severe frost and will also provide most of their feeding needs. A handful of bonemeal per plant in mid-May and July will meet their needs. Thyme is an excellent plant for growing in containers and requires no particular attention. Water to keep the compost moist, and feed with liquid fish emulsion food every two weeks from April to August.
