It has ivory or custard-hued, semi-soft flesh fruits surrounded by a thick, brick red to maroon-colored peel. The flesh has a dry and chalky, starchy consistency when young, and the taste is sweet, with a hint of vanilla. Although it can be eaten fresh, it is also prized as a baking variety, used in both desserts and semi-savory dishes. Red bananas can also be made in to jams, or in making tarts or cakes. One savory preparation includes cooking them in green curry.Fertilizer Fertilize bananas using any type of high nitrogen organic fertilizer. The Barbados cherry is a large, bushy shrub or small tree 10-15 feet in height and an equal width. The tree is erect, spreading and drooping, with a short trunk to 4 inches in diameter. Its evergreen leaves are elliptic,oblong and somewhat wavy, 3/4 to 2 3/4 inches long, dark green, and glossy when mature. The flowers have 5 pink or lavender, spoon-shaped, fringed petals.
