It is native to the central and eastern United States and also North in Ontario, Canada. It grows up to 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. It flowers from June to September attracting butterflies and bees. The flowers have drooping petals giving this one a unique look. It grows in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Its native range is from Mexico to Baja, California, and Sonora. Some familiar names include Blue Hesper Palm, Gray Goddess, and Mexican Blue Fan Palm. It can be seen growing in washed-out areas near canyon bottoms and rock crevices in higher elevations. It likes to grow with other palms such as Washingtonia filifera and Washingtonia robusta. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is widely used as an ornamental. It can grow to 50 feet tall with a robust trunk. The bluish-green leaves reach out 3-7 feet and are 3 feet wide. It forms a shag around the trunk like many palms and are cut off to keep a clean appearance.
