The flowers are lightly fragrantMatilija/Romneya/California Tree Poppy seeds are a challenge to Germinate since this plant’s seeds are triggered to germinate by smoke.1. Best way to get them germinate faster is to sprinkle them lightly with moist soil, cover that with pine sawdust, and light the covering (don’t use any accelerants). Burning that continues for at least 15 minutes is best. Water when the fire is out to wash the smoke chemicals down to the seeds, since it is the smoke rather than the fire that induces germination2. A less affective way is to burn pine sawdust, mix it with potting soil, moisten, and plant seeds in this mixture3. A third method is to smoke the planting medium with burning pine sawdust.With all these methods, the seed can still take several months to germinate.

150 Blue Elderberry Seeds (Sambucus Caerulea) Grow Zones: 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Germination: 01/03/23 Sambucus Caerulea (Blue Elderberry) is from the Caprifoliaceae, Honeysuckle family and it is a great shrub for your garden. Unlike black elderberry, it doesn’t need to grow right next to a natural water source. Likewise, it’s suitable for many growing environments. The blue berries and white flowers of the tree are edible and highly medicinal. Berries are used to make wine, jam, syrup and pies. Flowers are battered to make tempura or steeped into a tea. Medicinally, elderberries are used in cough syrups and they contain a high amount of vitamin C content and the alkaloids sambucine and hydrocianic acid. While they can be eaten fresh off of this variety, it is suggested to cook all elderberries and its absolutely necessary to cook the berries from black elderberry trees. The flowers of blue elderberry are medicinally valuable as well due to their rutin content and other flavenoids that improve immune functions. Germination instructions: Sambucus Caerulea seeds can be either sown in the fall or be scarified and stratified (see below) and sown in the spring. Plant seeds no more than 1/4 an inch into the soil, ensuring they are close to the soil surface. Keep seeds and soil moist. Seedlings form the next spring. Scarification and Stratification: If not planting in fall, scarify the seeds by placing them in hot water for a day then warm stratify by planting the seeds over top moist soil kept at 70-85 degrees for 2 months. Next, cold stratify for 3 months in temperatures around 40-50 degrees. After this, move the seeds into a warm spot. Enjoy next day handling time and shipping via USPS first class.

Pictured are photos of the actual plant that the offered seeds have come from. I started this plant from seeds gathered from a pod along the San Juan River in S Utah. This variety of Datura (datura wrightii) grows wild abundantly in the desert southwest under the right conditions. The plant in the picture is in a cold Northern Utah valley (Cache Valley, near the Idaho border), however the plant is on a south facing wall creating a “micro climate”, therefore giving it what it likes as a plant. This plant gets plenty of water but also plenty of drainage, just like you would expect in the SW desert with its monsoons. The plant in the pictures is 9-10 years old and thriving! I cut them to the ground each fall and they come back each spring. Sow seeds in spring. Use a sandy, alkaline mix (cactus mix) or sow outdoors in fast draining soil. Barely cover seed and tamp well, then water and allow to dry out before watering again. Keep doing this until germination occurs. It can take some time. I’ve seen the seeds germinate all at once after the potting soil became dry and very hot, in the direct sun.
