Its native range is from Peru. Common names include Empress Of India, the garden nasturtium, Nasturtium, Indian cress, or monks cress. A classic variety of Nasturtium where the name comes from Queen Victoria. An easy-to-grow annual or short-lived perennial in temperate zones. It has disc-shaped leaves that are waxy, letting the water roll off the leaves. The flowers are a brilliant velvet-crimson red with five petals and a yellow middle. They are in bloom from mid-summer to early fall. A mounding trailing plant perfect for filling in bare spots. It grows out to 2-4 square feet. They make an excellent groundcover as well. The flowers and leaves are edible and delicious in a salad, omelet, or pasta. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade.
