Large Purple Aeonium, Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’, Black Rose Aeonium arboreum

July 9, 2026

Aeoniumarboreum ‘Zwartkop’, Large Purple Aeonium, Black Rose Aeoniumarboreum var atropurpureum ‘Schwarzkopf’ Common names include: Black rose, Large purple aeonium Origin: Canary Islands and now cultivated worldwide. Description: a very dramatic ornamental, succulent which can have a Height of 3-5 feet and a Width of 1-4 feet depending on growing conditions. The long bare arching stalk-like stems hold very large terminal rosettes of very dark, deep purple-black, rubbery leaves. Flowers: immature and older plants, bright yellow star-shaped flowers form long conical clusters from the centers of the rosettes. This is a stunning contrast against the dark purple-black foliage. After flowering, the stem usually withers and dies unless you prune off the dead flowers and then the stem will continue to live and sprout new growth/leaves. Growth requirements: likes full sun to partial shade, drought tolerant once established, water thoroughly but infrequently and allow plant to dry in between watering’s. Can tolerate temperatures from 28°F to100°F. Soil: well-drained. Propagation: cuttings of the stems between spring and summer. All of the Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ were grown outdoors in southern California and are very strong and hardy plants. As you can see in the pictures, my plants do reach heights of 6 feet which is very unusual. Even professional growers have been amazed at the height of my plants. No two plants are ever identical and there is no guarantee that your plant will reach this height. There are many conditions that affect the health and growth of plants. This Aeonium arboreum can be planted in pots for the patio or in outdoor landscaping for a dramatic look. The picture that you see is of the primary plant and it is shown for you to appreciate it’s stunning beauty. The plants are grown together in the same conditions but variations in shape and sizes do occur. ***The Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ that you are bidding on IS A STEM CUTTING from the primary plant in the picture. It is approximately 5-6 inches in height and does not have any roots. For best results, it is important to plant the Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ immediately upon receipt to establish the root system. These plants grow very quickly. Great care is taken in selecting, packaging and shipping your Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ to ensure your satisfaction. I only ship to addresses in the continental US due to higher postage costs and restrictions.
