WHITE YARROW SEEDS (Achillea millefolium) 2000 Seeds About Yarrow Yarrow is a versatile plant globally recognized for both its therapeutic qualities and its appealing flowers and foliage. Its robust, spreading rhizomatous roots make it an excellent choice for erosion control along banks and disturbed hillsides, frequently utilized in permaculture to absorb excess rain runoff. Yarrow is the holistic answer to many ailments. If you aim to repel biting insects or attract pollinators, yarrow is the answer. It draws in numerous butterfly, bee, and beneficial wasp species, while it is also a reliable ingredient in do-it-yourself bug repellent formulations. Furthermore, yarrow remains untouched by deer, adding to its appeal in various landscapes. When to Plant Yarrow Seeds Start yarrow indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost of the season, or sow directly into the garden after the last frost of the season has passed. Sowing: Direct sow white yarrow seeds in fall or early spring; fall planted seed will remain dormant until spring. To start Achillea Millefolium seeds indoors, plant them just below the surface of the soil since they need light to germinate. Keep the soil temperature at 65-75 degrees F, but out of the hottest rays of sunlight. Growing: While the young plants should be watered to help them establish a deep root system, too much watering of mature plants can cause stem and root rot or mildew. This species grows best in sandy or well drained soil, and tolerates drought conditions. Since yarrow tends to flop over in fertile soil or shade, staking may be needed; this also protects the plant's fragile stems in high winds. Deadhead the wilted blossoms often for continued blooming. After the plant has finished blooming, cut the plant down to its lower leaves for healthy spring growth. When the plant becomes 3-4 years old, it will benefit from being dug up and divided in the early spring or fall. Because yarrow can become invasive through the spread of roots and its reseeding habit, care should be taken to control the spread of the plant. This can be done by putting a barrier underground surrounding the plant's roots, or by growing the plant in large container. This plant attracts butterflies and beneficial insects as well as repelling deer and rabbits, and grows well in borders or large containers. As a companion plant with herbs, it increases their fragrance, flavor, and essential oils. Harvesting: Gather leaves and flowers as soon as they mature. Harvest the whole stem as soon as it begins to bloom; bundle the stems and hang them upside down to dry away from direct sunlight. Yarrow blossoms make good cut flowers, and when dried they hold their color well. Keep in mind that if the flowers have been open for more than a day, they will go to seed as they dry. Individual blossoms or leaves can also be harvested and spread out to dry in a protected location. Seed Saving: Allow the flower heads to mature and begin to dry; the stem will start to turn brown. Remove the heads and spread them out to dry out of direct sunlight, then rub them lightly to release the seeds. The fluff can be removed from the seeds by scrubbing them over a metal screen or running them through a hammer mill. Being in the aster family, it can sometimes be hard to get good seed set, and a large percentage of white yarrow seeds are often not viable. The empty seeds can be blown off with a fanning mill. Store white yarrow seeds in a cool, dark place. In cool climates, planting wildflower seeds in spring or early summer is ideal since temperatures are warm enough for germination but not so hot that it’s difficult to keep seeded areas moist. Planting in summer is not recommended since it is difficult to keep seed beds continually moist for the first 4-6 weeks. The hot summer sun tends to dry the soil out too quickly.Wildflower seeds can also be planted in fall in cool climates. Dormant fall wildflower plantings should be late enough so that seeds do not germinate until spring. These must be done when air and soil temperatures are too low for germination, typically after several freezes but before there is snow cover. The seeds will lie “dormant” in the soil until spring when warmer temperatures and moisture are available. Soil expansion and contraction during the winter can also improve seed-soil contact (cold stratification). Perennials can also be sown in early fall provided that there are at least 10-12 weeks of growing time before the plants go dormant for the winter. This amount of time generally allows enough root growth for plants to survive the winter.WHERE TO PLANT WILDFLOWERS: Though many wildflowers do tolerate some filtered shade, and a few actually thrive in it. The vast majority are definitely sun lovers. Wildflowers will generally sprout in all but the most difficult conditions. This means that pampering your site with fertilizer or rich sod is not usually necessary.HOW TO PLANT WILDFLOWERS: Clear the area and work the soil as best you can before planting your seeds. We recommend mixing your seeds with sand – 2 parts sand to 1 part seeds. This allows for a more even distribution and also provides a convenient way to mark which portions of the site have been seeded and which have not. For a smaller area, you can hand-broadcast the seeds. After the seeds have been sown, lightly compress the seeds into the soil about 1/2″ to protect from birds and wind.MOISTURE REQUIREMENTS: All seeds, including wildflower seeds, need ample moisture to germinate and to develop into healthy seedlings. Best results will be obtained by soaking the planted areas thoroughly and maintaining consistent moisture for 4-6 weeks. Afterwards, watering can be gradually reduced over several weeks. In non-irrigated situations, plant in the spring or before periods of anticipated rainfall.HOW TO CARE FOR WILDFLOWERS: Although Wildflowers are pretty easy to take care of, there are some steps to keep it looking beautiful. Regularly weed to ensure your wildflowers are getting the nutrients they need. Water your plants during dry spells. Deadhead blooms that are spent to encourage new growth.WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR WILDFLOWER GARDEN: Most of our wildflower seed mixes contain annual, biennial and perennial species. Please read the mix contents. The annuals are included to assure maximum color during the first season and to act as a nurse crop for the slower-growing perennials. Annuals germinate quickly when conditions are favorable, providing a quick ground cover and competition against weeds. Most perennial and biennial species begin to bloom the second season, but not as profusely as annuals. Therefore, wildflower plantings look noticeably different after the first year. Please print the planting instructions. Your success and happiness is our success and happiness! WE SHIP FAST & FREE! The exact date will naturally vary based on your region and the severity of the winter season. The important thing is to not ‘jump the gun” and plant too early; if seeds are installed prior to a late-season frost, they will be lost for the season and will need to be re-seeded.For All Perennial Mix, a late summer or early fall planting is recommended, once temperatures have started to cool but with your first expected frost still a few weeks out.For areas that tend to have little to no frost (Florida, Texas, California, etc..), wildflower can be planted all year round except in the dead of summer. For areas that get a hard, killing frost (Indiana, New York, Minnesota, etc..), wildflower should be planted in spring, summer and fall. Most wildflower mixes unless otherwise noted need at least 6 hours of sun to perform well. Full sun all day will give best results.Preparing the Soil: Remove all vegetation from the area where wildflower seed will be sowed. Remove any plants, till the soil and rake the area flat. If soil is a hard, no draining clay soil then compost should be added to help aid drainage.Planting Wildflower: Sand should be added to wildflower mixes that do not have filler already mixed in. Sand will help spread seeds better without clumps and can be seen better to aid in spreading. with sand for better visibilty and scatter the seeds directly on top of the soil. If you are sowing a larger area, we recommend using a seed spreader if not, you can sow by hand. After the seeds has been spread out they should be lightly compressed into the soil, making sure not to bury them but compressed enough so rain and wind will not move. You can either walk on them, use a board or if you are sowing a larger area, rent a seed roller.Growing Wildflower: It is important to keep the soil moist until the seedlings are about 4-6″ tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. During dry weather the occasional watering will help. Do not let soil dry out while they are seedlings are this will kill the plants.Caring for Wildflower: Once a year the wildflower meadow should be mowed over. Wait until late fall when all the flowers have bloomed and dropped their seeds. Then with a weed trimmer, or a mower set on a tallest setting, mow over the entire meadow of wildflower. This will encourage strong growth in the spring without competing with dead old foliage.COLD STRATIFYING: Everyone wants plants. Now. But there are a small group of seeds that require a special treatment before they will even germinate in a climate that has temperatures below freezing. This process is called “Cold Stratification.” There are two ways to accomplish this. Fall Planting: If time is not a problem, you can put them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, they will return and bloom as expected. If you are planting poppies direct sowing is recommended in late fall or early spring for zones 2-8Create a “False Winter”: The second way to do this, if you want to save time, is to create a “false winter.” What this does is trick the seeds into thinking they have been in the ground for an entire year. All they need is to be in your refrigerator for at least 2 ½ months. About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand. Seal and label the bag with seed name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 2½ mos. before planting in spring. (The cold period mimics a full winter’s cold.)Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives.WE SHIP FAST &FREE! Sunflowers send down long taproots that can be stunted in small pots. Once all danger of frost has passed and both daytime and nighttime temperatures reach 55F to 60F you are ready to sow your sunflower seeds.WHERE TO PLANT SUNFLOWER SEEDSSunflowers grow best in full-sun locations – receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun exposure per day. Though sunflowers are not finicky, they do appreciate loose, well-draining soil. Choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds, perhaps along a fence or near a building. Also consider the height that the particular variety will reach.HOW TO PLANT SUNFLOWER SEEDSOnce you have chosen your location, dig down to a depth of 2 inches and turn the soil over to loosen it. Many seeds, like poppies, need sun to germinate. This is not the case with sunflowers and in fact need to be pressed 1 inch deep into the soil. If left on the soil surface, more than likely birds will come and eat them before they ever get anywhere close to germination. Final spacing should be 36” apart for giant sunflowers, 24’ apart for regular-sized and 12” apart for miniature varieties.HOW TO CARE FOR SUNFLOWERSSunflowers blooms often last 30-45 days. Toward the end of this period, the green back of the flower head will begin to turn yellow and will usually droop at this time. You will also see the seeds swelling on the face of the sunflower. Cover the flowers with paper bags to protect them from birds. Cut off the flower heads and leave inside the brown paper bag. Store this bag in a well-ventilated place like a garage until fully dry. Rub along the seeds with the palm of your hand and the seeds should fall right out into your bag, or work over a cookie sheet. To eat: Soak overnight in water, or salt water. Drain, spread on a shallow baking sheet, and roast for 3 hours at 200F or until crisp.Sunflowers are usually problem-free. Plant early enough so that autumn frosts do not cut your sunflowers’ life cycle short. OR for blooms throughout fall plant seeds every two weeks and you will have a full season of blooms!WE SHIP FAST & FREE! Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. Ft About NasturtiumThese jewel-like flowers, with their flat, round leaves and bright flowers, grow well in containers or as pollinator attractors in vegetable gardens. Beautiful and beneficial, nasturtiums are often planted as companions to vegetables as they can help to repel harmful pests. Not only do nasturtiums produce gorgeous blooms, but the blooms and leaves are also edible and have a sweet, peppery taste. They work best in summer salads giving a radish-like taste and elevating the look of your salad from mere food to culinary art!Where to Plant Nasturtium SeedsNasturtiums perform best in full sun, in average, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Light shade is tolerated in hot summer areas. Nasturtiums do better in soil of moderate to low fertility. Nasturtiums do equally well in containers and in garden beds. Some of the trailing varieties show off their beauty draping over the sides of pots or walls. They also like to ramble over hillsides. Consider planting them in your vegetable garden as well, as they draw aphids and other unwanted pests away, yet attract beneficial pollinators. When to Plant Nasturtium SeedsSow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed or indoors four to six weeks prior to your last spring frost date. How to Plant Nasturtium SeedsBefore planting, we recommend soaking seeds for four to eight hours to encourage germination. Learn more about soaking seeds here. Sow seeds about ½ inch deep and 10 to 12 inches apart in the garden if direct sowing. For indoor planting, sow seeds in potting mixture ½ inch deep, and water well. Keep the soil moist and at 70 to 75°F consistently. The seeds will germinate and emerge in 10 to 14 days. As soon as you see growth, provide plenty of light by a sunny window or with the use of grow lights. Leave lights on for 16 hours a day, turning off for eight hours. Fertilizer can be used when seedlings reach three to four weeks old, but it is not necessary. After all danger of frost has passed, transplant hardened-off seedlings with care, as nasturtium roots easily damage during handling. Read more about hardening off here. How to Care for NasturtiumWater regularly throughout the growing season, but be careful not to overwater. Deadhead your plants to prolong blooming. If maintaining your nasturtiums in containers, they’ll need to be trimmed back occasionally to promote new foliage. Leaves and flowers can be harvested anytime, using scissors to avoid damaging the plants.SHIPPING Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. NO TRACKING.
