Sunflowers send down long taproots that can be stunted in small pots. Once all danger of frost has passed and both daytime and nighttime temperatures reach 55F to 60F you are ready to sow your sunflower seeds.WHERE TO PLANT SUNFLOWER SEEDSSunflowers grow best in full-sun locations – receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun exposure per day. Though sunflowers are not finicky, they do appreciate loose, well-draining soil. Choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds, perhaps along a fence or near a building. Also consider the height that the particular variety will reach.HOW TO PLANT SUNFLOWER SEEDSOnce you have chosen your location, dig down to a depth of 2 inches and turn the soil over to loosen it. Many seeds, like poppies, need sun to germinate. This is not the case with sunflowers and in fact need to be pressed 1 inch deep into the soil. If left on the soil surface, more than likely birds will come and eat them before they ever get anywhere close to germination. Final spacing should be 36” apart for giant sunflowers, 24’ apart for regular-sized and 12” apart for miniature varieties.HOW TO CARE FOR SUNFLOWERSSunflowers blooms often last 30-45 days. Toward the end of this period, the green back of the flower head will begin to turn yellow and will usually droop at this time. You will also see the seeds swelling on the face of the sunflower. Cover the flowers with paper bags to protect them from birds. Cut off the flower heads and leave inside the brown paper bag. Store this bag in a well-ventilated place like a garage until fully dry. Rub along the seeds with the palm of your hand and the seeds should fall right out into your bag, or work over a cookie sheet. To eat: Soak overnight in water, or salt water. Drain, spread on a shallow baking sheet, and roast for 3 hours at 200F or until crisp.Sunflowers are usually problem-free. Plant early enough so that autumn frosts do not cut your sunflowers’ life cycle short. OR for blooms throughout fall plant seeds every two weeks and you will have a full season of blooms!WE SHIP FAST & FREE! Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. Evercolor ‘Everillo’ Japanese Sedge Carex Shade Grass Hosta Companion

July 8, 2026

Our shipping window is from April until November. During the off season, winter, the plants are covered up and inaccessible. Orders placed during this time will ship in the order they are received when we resume. Place your orders without worry and be sure to get your plants before the sell out. Thanks for understanding. Mix and match anything from our store to receive the multi-plant discount! Humble Hen Farm & Nursery Height: 10-12.0 Inches Spread: 28-32.0 Inches Common Name: Sedge This sport of ‘Evergold’ has a similar performance to its parent but with a brilliant, solid gold leaf color. Long, thin arching leaf blades are chartreuse green toward the crown, but turn golden yellow as they are exposed to UV light. Short tan inflorescence appears just above the foliage. Like ‘Evergold’, this low-growing evergreen sedge can be used in rock gardens or as spillers in containers. For best golden color, plant in a location with morning sun. In deep shade, foliage remains chartreuse. Plant in moist soils. From Pat Fitzgerald. Info: Our plants are grown in 5.25 x 5.25 x 5.25 inch pots and develop large root systems. These are not a small liner but a plant you can put right into your garden. That means you will get a bigger plant right away compared to a starter plant. We guarantee you will get a true to type healthy plant that you will love for years. If you have any problems or questions we are happy to help. During early spring plants may still be breaking dormancy so they may appear smaller than they will be when they fully leaf out. Shipping: We do not ship to Hawaii or Alaska due to cost and import restrictions. Plants will be removed from their pots and loose soil removed and the rootball placed in a bag. We are an inspected nursery from the VA Dept of AG. Photos and cultural info courtesy of Walters Gardens, INC.

Epc. Kyoguchi ‘Happy Field’ x self | BS not in bloom | 3″ pot

July 8, 2026

Kyoguchi is a Spring-Summer bloomer than, when mature, can produce over 50 1.5″ flowers on a branched, upright stem. It is also very useful in hybridizing. We grow the plants in bright indirect light with temperatures from about 65-85 degrees night to day. Water regularly year-round using a liquid or water soluble fertilizer once a month. This a blooming plant. I pack my plants well for transit however I am unable to guarantee flower spikes on plants after they leave my hands. If the postage company mishandles the package I cannot guarantee that the spike will arrive in good shape.
