Native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, southwest Asia and northern Africa, it was initially brought into the United States for erosion control during the 1950s. After its introduction, additional uses included livestock forage, green fertilizer and ornamental ground cover. Planted widely throughout the United States, crown vetch is now naturalized in all but four states. Planting of crown vetch continues today primarily along roadsides and other rights of way to stabilize banks and prevent erosion. Found most frequently within disturbed areas, it also commonly populates open fields, waste grounds and gravel bars along streams. Crown vetch tolerates a variety of environmental conditions and grows in dry to moistsoils. However, it prefers open, sunny areas and is intolerant of full shade. Creeping stems, growing 2 to 6 feet long, result in large clumps of crown vetch. Leaves are compound, consisting of 15 to 25 (always odd numbered) oblong leaflets 1 to 2 inches long. Pea-like, pinkish-white flowers occur in clusters at the end of long stalks and bloom from May through August. The flowers develop into long, narrow, flattened pods containing slender seeds. Crown vetch seeds prolifically, with a persistent seed bank remaining viable for up to 15 years. Spreading vegetative, rhizomes can reach lengths of 10 feet, rapidly expanding stands of crown vetch.

Alfalfa Plot Location, Preparation, Maintenance and Replanting Alfalfa requires a little more planning and care prior to and after planting than other food plot forages. Here are some basic tips to growing a healthy alfalfa food plot. Plot Location Drainage: Alfalfa, in general, does not tolerate wet-natured ground. It prefers well-drained soil. Well-drained sites can be just about any soil type that is on a slight angle where water drains quickly; a hilltop; sandy soil that drains easily and quickly; or any other location that simply does drains well. Sunlight: Alfalfa prefers sites that receive a significant amount of direct sunlight – 5 hours per day or more. Alfalfa can grow in shadier locations, but the plants may not be as productive. Soil Depth: Alfalfa excels in deep soils. The deeper the soil, the deeper the roots go, and the more drought tolerant the plot will be. Alfalfa roots can go more than 10 feet deep if the soil is deep enough. Alfalfa is naturally a desert plant from the Middle East. A rocky, shallow soil is not a good site for alfalfa. With deep soil, alfalfa will grow from the Gulf Coast states all the way to Canada. Try to select sites that have a soil depth of at least a couple feet. Plot Preparation Soil pH: After you have selected an adequate plot site, get a soil test as soon as possible to determine soil pH and fertilizer requirements. Alfalfa is very sensitive to soil pH. It needs a pH of 6.5-7.5. If your soil pH is low (which is common for the eastern U.S.), apply the recommended amount of lime at least four months before planting, as it takes many months for lime to dissolve. Several tons of limes per acre is a common application. Planting: When it is time to plant, work the soil up thoroughly and then pack the soil with a roller or cultipacker (if desired, Roundup can be applied two or more weeks in advance to kill “junk” in the plot). Broadcast the seed and then roll the plot again. Alfalfa seed should planted about ¼-inch deep. There are other methods to successfully plant alfalfa. The broadcast seeding rate for alfalfa is 20 lbs/acre (a 50-lb bag plants 2 ½ acres). Fertilizer: Fertilizer can be spread the day of planting or several weeks before. Minimal nitrogen will be needed, but alfalfa does need phosphorous and potassium. Refer to your soil test for exact fertilizer needs. If you don’t take a soil test, apply a minimum of 50 lbs of phosphorous and 100 lbs of potassium per acre per year (that recommendation is very low for many soils). A soil test may reveal you need less or more fertilizer than the above recommendation. As a legume, alfalfa produces its own nitrogen. Boron: Alfalfa also needs a certain amount of boron. Refer to your soil test to determine if you need to add boron to your plot. Plot Maintenance Fertilizer: Fertilizer should be applied each year in spring or fall. See the Plot Preparation section for more fertilizer tips. Weed Control: Non Round Up Ready… Mowing: Alfalfa is more attractive to deer when less than 10 inches tall. If the plot gets taller, mow it to 4-6 inches. It is not recommended let your alfalfa get several feet tall and then mow it short. The cuttings can pile up, resulting in dead or diseased plants under the clippings. If you have large plots that get very tall, it is suggested to have the plot mowed and baled (local farmers may be eager to harvest your plots, and interested farmers are likely to harvest the plot and still pay you a price per bale – check your local alfalfa hay prices). It is best to mow plots before a majority of plants produce flowers. How Long Will the Plot Last? If well maintained, alfalfa plots can easily last for five years or longer. Production for three to five years can be expected. Poor quality varieties may not last as long, but improved varieties, such as Alfa-Graze, can thrive for many years. Replanting Plots Alfalfa produces a chemical that is toxic to its own seedlings (a mystery of nature). The toxin does not kill alfalfa seedlings, but it significantly hinders growth. So after a plot is no longer productive, plant an alfalfa plot in another location. The old site can be left fallow or replanted with a non-legume food plot forage to take advantage of nitrogen produced by the alfalfa (cereal grains, corn, brassicas, chicory). The site needs to sit for at least two winters before being replanted with alfalfa.

Tifblair Centipede Grass Seed – 2 Lbs.

PLANTING DATES Centipede can be planted anytime a new lawn can be prepared. However late summer planting (August 15 – November 1) is not advised due to inadequate time for establishment before winter. For best results plant in March or April, but quicker germination will occur May–July. TifBlair can be planted in the fall of the year after the soil temperatures are cold enough to prevent germination (typically after November 1). TifBlair seed will not germinate until the soil warms the following spring. PLANTING RATES To determine the amount of seed to purchase, multiply the length of the your lawn in feet by the width in feet to determine the square feet (sq. ft.). Subtract area for sidewalks, driveways, and other areas that will not be planted. Plant TifBlair at a rate of ½ pound per 1,000 sq. ft. Higher seeding rates (up to 1lb. per 1000 sq.ft.) will produce a quicker grow-in and produce a more dense turf in a shorter amount of time. Using higher rates of seed is more cost-effective than trying to save money on “light” seeding rates, because more watering and weed control will be necessary with “light” rates. PLANTING Establishing a beautiful and attractive lawn consists of six easy steps. 1. Remove loose debris, such as sticks, stones, and trash. Till and loosen soil to create a crumbly seedbed. Work in a 5-10-15 fertilizer at a rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft. Centipede thrives in acidic soil. DO NOT LIME UNLESS SOIL TEST FOR A CENTIPEDE LAWN ADVISES YOU TO LIME. 2. To prepare seedbed, rake thoroughly and smooth the surface to provide a crumbly top layer that is ideal for sowing. 3. Sow the seed according to your spreader’s recommended rate. Divide seed into two equal portions. Sow in one direction east to west, then use second portion and sow north to south to insure uniform coverage. 4. Work seed into soil ¼ to ½ inch with the flexing rake. Roll yard smooth. Use straw as light mulch in areas of erosion concern. Mulch should be used lightly so that it does not shade young seedlings. 5. Most Important Step: Water thoroughly and frequently, but avoid creating puddles. Soil should be kept moist up to ½ inch deep until emergence of the seedlings. After seedling emergence water less frequently. Water only as needed after stand is established. 6. Mow frequently to control weeds once seedlings are established, taking care to never remove than 1/3 of the plant. FOR RESEEDING EXISTING LAWNS 1. Cut existing lawn as close as possible or use Round-UpÒ to reduce vigor and competition from existing lawn. 2. Rake or scratch (aerify, scarify) the surface and remove debris. 3. Apply seed and water as described above. *Round-Up is a registered trademark of Monsanto Company TifBlair Advantage Exceptional Late Season Color And Quality In tests conducted in Alabama, Oklahoma and Georgia, TifBlair had equal or better turf quality than the other tested centipede varieties. Chufas Food Plot Seed (Cyperus esculentus) Chufas are great for Turkey, Deer and other wildlife. Plant 25-50 lbs. – per acre Chufas are a bunch grass with a peanut like underground nut – used for food plots of deer, turkey, hogs and wild hogs. This legume is very similar to peanuts, if you have ever seen hogs rooting peanuts, they go after chufas the same way. Plant in spring through summer. Wildlife digs up the chufas once they mature. Chufas are perennial sedges that are one of the most popular foods for wild turkeys. Chufa plants have underground tubers, which are part of the plant that turkeys eat. One chufas tuber will produce a plant that can grow to 15-75 tubers when mature. Turkeys find the tubers by scratching them from just under the surface of the ground. The tubers are high in protein and fat, which makes them especially nutritious for wild turkeys. Chufa can also make an excellent food source for other wildlife including deer and ducks. Chufa plants grow well in the southern half of the US from Northern California across to Southern Iowa and even Southern Pennsylvania. Chufa plants grow in a variety of soil, but perform best on well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Clay soils can support chufa. When growing in clay soils, lightly turn the soil in the fall to expose the tubers. This practice can be done periodically to extend the food supply into winter and early spring. Simply plow several strips twice a month until the entire field has been plowed. Generally, chufa will grow anywhere that corn can be successfully grown.
