Calamagrostis x acutiflora, commonly known as feather reed grass, is a perennial grass that forms elegant, upright clumps reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet. Characterized by its narrow, arching leaves that are deep green and can grow up to 2 feet long, this grass offers a lush texture throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer, it produces feathery, plume-like flower heads that rise above the foliage, displaying a soft, airy appearance and turning a golden hue as they mature. Feather reed grass is prized for its ornamental qualities, often used in garden borders, mass plantings, and as a vertical accent in landscapes. It thrives in a variety of soil types, prefers full sun to partial shade, and is highly adaptable to different moisture levels, making it an excellent choice for both traditional and contemporary gardens. Its resilience and ability to attract birds and beneficial insects further enhance its value in ornamental and ecological settings. Zones 3-9 Germination To germinate Calamagrostis x acutiflora or feather reed grass, start by preparing the seeds, which benefit from a cold stratification period. Place the seeds in a damp paper towel, then seal them in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 4 to 6 weeks. After stratification, prepare a seed-starting mix or a well-draining potting soil in seed trays or pots. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, lightly pressing them in without covering, as they need light for germination. Mist the soil lightly to moisten it, and cover the trays with a plastic dome or wrap to retain humidity. Place the trays in a warm area with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature around 65-75°F (18-24°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Germination should occur within 2 to 3 weeks. Once seedlings develop a few true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into larger pots or directly into the garden, allowing them to acclimate to outdoor conditions before planting in their final location.
