Sabal causiarum seeds. Puerto Rican Hat Palm! Cold Hardy! Massive Palm!

Sabal causiarum is a large-leafed Sabal species native to the island of Puerto Rico, as well as a few other islands in The Caribbean. It typically grows to a height of 10 meters (33 feet). Sabal causiarum is a palm that prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It is also tolerant of salt spray and wind, making it a popular choice for coastal landscapes. It’s an absolutely massive palm in the landscape, and a great centerpiece for a large yard. Sabal causiarum can also tolerate quite hard frosts and freezes, making it suitable for zone 9a and possibly slightly lower. It’s not exactly a slow-growing palm. A very sturdy palm with a fat, stocky trunk and thick, wind-resistant leaves. The palms in my pictures are growing in Gainesville, Florida, which is rated as a USDA zone 9a. We see significant feezes here on a yearly basis into the low 20sF and possibly even below 20F on occasion. Germination of Sabal causiarum seeds is pretty easy. Give it some bottom heat and keep the seed-starting media (I use a 50/50 mix of peat moss/perlite) moist but not sopping wet.

How to Germinate Japanese Maple Seed When planting Japanese maple seeds, it’s important to pretreat them before sowing them in the ground. If you plan on planting your seeds outdoors in the spring, place them in a paper bag and store them in a cool, dark place through the winter. If you plan on starting them indoors in a pot, you can skip the winter storage and begin treating the seeds right away. First, break off the wings of the seeds. Next, fill a container with water that’s very warm but not too hot to put your hand in it, and soak your seeds for 24 hours. Then mix the seeds in a small amount of potting soil and put it all in a sealable plastic bag. Poke a couple holes in the bag for ventilation and put it in your refrigerator for 90 days to stratify. Once the 90 days are up, you can plant the seeds in a container or directly in the ground. If you live somewhere with cold winters, you can skip the fridge and simply sow your seeds outdoors after they soak. The cold of winter will stratify the seeds just as well.

Canary date palms notes the long leaves of the species from 8 to 20 feet long and the extremely sharp spines at the frond base. The trunk can grow to 4 feet in diameter. Small white or gray blossoms produce showy ornamental date-like fruits in the summer. Zones 9-11Canary Palm Germination: 1) Fill a large pot with potting soil. Water this soil so that it is damp, but not wet.2) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil around 92 degrees F.3) Insert the seed into the soil so that it is just “lightly covering the seed” as the “need light to germinate”. If the pot is large enough, you can plant several seeds.4) Place the pot in the large plastic bag and seal it. Air out daily for 30 mins. & periodically inspect the seeds for any signs of mold or fungus. If found, simply wash the seed in a copper based fungicide, and rinse it off well before placing it back into “new & sterile” soil.5) Patience is needed as with any Palm or Tropical seeds. Expect germination to happen anywhere from 2-5 months. If a few sprout earlier than others, don’t throw the rest out as they are still good. They just need a bit more time and are Definitely Worth the Wait!
