SAVORY, SUMMER, HEIRLOOM, ORGANIC, 25+ SEEDS, NON GMO, HERB, SPICE, GARDEN SEED SAVORY, SUMMER, HEIRLOOM, 25+ SEEDS, NON GMO, HERB, SPICE, GARDEN SEED Click images to enlarge Description HARVESTE ALL SEED LOTS ARE TESTED FOR GERMINATION. Delicious. No garden is complete without Summer Savory. Summer Savory is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. A native, annual, herb from the Mediterranean/Central Europe area. Known as the best culinary savory for flavoring recipes, dressings, gravy, and fresh salads due to its mild peppery taste. Excellent in bean dishes! The slender, pointy, slightly hairy leaves are nicely fragrant, fresh or dried, and grow on reddish colored stems with lavender pink flowers. Bushy plants grow up to 2 feet tall and work very well in containers or inside pots. It has multi medicinal uses and is even used as an aphrodisiac. Summer savory is widely renowned as a culinary herb with a smoother flavor then Winter Savory and similar to marjoram, but unique to itself. Originally introduced to England from the Mediterranean, it quickly took its place along with thyme, marjoram and basil. Indeed, it was one of the herbs that Charlemagne specifically ordered planted in his own royal garden. There are two major types of savory in common cultivation, winter and summer savory. Summer savory is lighter in flavor, but still has the characteristic minty-peppery flavor that is peculiar to the species. It has been used medicinally as well as for cooking. The Greeks, for instance, used it to treat earaches and toothaches, and Roman midwives used it as an all purpose disinfectant. According to ancient Greek lore, Pliny the Elder gave it the name satureja, which is a derivative of the word satyr. This was because satyrs were thought to have lived in fields of savory; this also implies that the herb itself was why the satyrs’ were so “passionate”, or so the Greeks thought. Whether or not it’s true, there’s no doubt that summer savory has earned its place in the culinary annals. It is often used to flavor spring vegetables, potatoes and cheeses. It is a primary ingredient in the French herbs Provencal. At least one modern herbal notes that the presence of p-cymene in the volatile oil may make it useful in treatment of diarrhea and sore throats. Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted. This can be grown nicely in containers and clay pots. Zones 3-10 All seeds are packaged and for the current growing season. About Us We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family’s feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest. In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year. We would like the opportunity to share some of these seeds with you. Pictures sell! Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.300+ Listing Templates! Auctiva gets you noticed!
