Your shopping cart will combine the shipping for you. We only ship in the U.S.************* Please read full listing before purchasing ************* Description Mimosa trees are a member of the Fabaceae family and are a popular ornamental tree in the home landscape. Also known as silk trees and Albizia silk trees, these beauties have a lovely feathery habit with wispy pink to rose aromatic flowers. Ideal for USDA planting zones 6 through 9, this tree provides light shade and adds a lovely burst of color amongst other deciduous or evergreen trees, or when used as a specimen. The fringed foliage ranges from bright green to chocolate brown, depending on the variety. 1. Store the Seeds Put the mimosa seeds in a paper or cloth bag and store them until spring in a cool, dry location. Avoid using a plastic bag as it will trap moisture and cause the seeds to rot. 2. Prep the Seeds Prepare the mimosa seeds for sowing after the last spring frost. Rub the end of each seed with a nail file until a small, pale spot appears on the hull. Then soak the seeds in hot water for 24 hours before sowing. 3. Sow the Seeds Fill individual 5-inch biodegradable pots with a lightly moistened mixture of half sand and half loam. Sow one seed in each pot at a 1-inch depth. Spread a 1/4-inch-thick layer of sand over the soil. 4. Move the Pots Outside Set the pots outdoors against a south- or west-facing wall with full sun. Provide 75 F bottom heat with a propagation mat if the weather is cool and light shade at midday if daytime temperatures rise above 90 F. 5. Monitor the Moisture Carefully monitor the moisture level of the soil. Water to a 2-inch depth whenever the top 1/2 inch of soil dries out. Avoid overwatering or letting the soil dry out completely, which will cause the mimosa seeds to fail. 6. Watch for Germination Watch for germination one to three weeks after sowing. Grow the seedlings under the same conditions as during germination until they reach 3 inches in height and produce several mature leaves. 7. Transplant the Trees Transplant the mimosa trees into a permanent bed in autumn at least six weeks before the first frost. Choose a planting site with full sun at least 20 feet away from structures, utility lines and other trees. Plant multiple mimosa trees approximately 20 feet apart. Mimosas thrive in a variety of soil types and textures and may be found growing along roadsides or in abandoned fields in poor to average soils in full sun, although they can tolerate partial shade. Until the trees are well-established in your landscape, apply water when the top couple of inches of soil are dry to the touch; reduce water in winter. Suppress weeds by applying approximately 3 inches of organic mulch evenly out to the tips of the branches, but don’t allow the mulch to touch the base of the tree. Withhold fertilizer for the first two to three years and then have the soil tested to determine if fertilizer is necessary. Store Policies All seeds will come in a resalable plastic zip lock bag and placed in a bubble envelope so the seeds are not damaged by shipping machines. All seed packets contain no fillers or other weeds or seeds mixed in. Most have been harvested by hand & all test at a high germination rate. Jarrahdale Blue Pumpkin, Cucurbita maxima, Seeds (6-10 lbs.)
Jarrahdale Blue Pumpkin, Cucurbita maxima, Seeds (6-10 lbs.) This is an Australian blue-grey skinned pumpkin. Excellent quality orange-yellow flesh for baking and pies. Shape is flat and ribbed and very decorative looking; also a good keeper.100 days. Open Pollinated How to grow Great PumpkinsCulture Pumpkins need a lot of sun. Choose the sunniest place you have; remember that pumpkins are sensitive and will need shelter from wind and frost. Try to protect pumpkins from the worst of the elements by covering them during cold nightsPumpkins like and need a lot of water, but don’t plant pumpkins in wet or dense soil. They need good, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil in early spring, as soon as the ground is warm. Fertilize the patch with a good four inches of rotting cow manure. Pumpkins do best in soil that is slightly acid or nearly neutral. If you live in a part of the country where there is still danger of frost in late April or early May, start pumpkin seeds indoors about two weeks before planting.Planting When seedlings have the fourth or fifth leaf, set them outdoors in hills about the size of a pitcher s mound, one plant to a hill. Protect pumpkin seedlings the first few weeks with plastic-covered frames. Space each hill at least 20 feet apart.Maintenance:Pumpkins need consistent watering, especially once fruit has set. If pollinators are not abundant, you may have to pollinate by hand, by removing the male blossoms and dusting them onto the female blossoms. The female blossoms can be distinguished by the tiny immature fruit at the base of the flower.Harvest: Pick fruit carefully, leaving a little stem, when the vines begin to dry out and the fruit is fully mature, usually after the first autumn frost. Sowing Pumpkin Seeds:For best results, please follow the instructions in the order provided.Scarify: Soak in water for 2-4 HoursGermination: Sow 1/2” to 1″ Deep, Keep Warm and moist (Not wet).Sow only after soil temperature has warmed up. When you know how to care for hibiscus plants, you will be rewarded with many years of lovely flowers. Let’s look at some tips on how to care for hibiscus. Growing Hibiscus From Seeds Nick the Seed Coat Nick the hard seed coat at the wider, rounded end of the seed with a clean craft knife. Soak the Seeds Soak the seeds in a small bowl of hot water for up to 24 hours. Begin the sowing process 12 weeks before your last expected spring frost. Prep the Planting Tray Fill a planting tray with moist seed-starting mix, usually a soil-less product that combines perlite, vermiculite and peat moss. Sow the Seeds Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, firming the moist seed-starting mix over the seed. Place one seed per plug if your seed tray has inserts that hold the mix in separate 1- to 2-inch compartments. Otherwise sow seeds a few inches apart so seedlings will be easy to remove later. Keep Them Warm Set the tray on a waterproof greenhouse heat mat set to 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit or in a room with the same temperature range. Conserve Moisture Cover the tray with its included clear plastic dome or with plastic wrap to keep moisture in. Check the Seed Tray Check the seed tray regularly over the one to three weeks it takes the seeds to germinate. Ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. Too-wet soil can cause the seeds to rot before they germinate. Remove the Plastic Remove the plastic when plants emerge and move the tray to a site where it receives bright, indirect sunlight. Apply Fertilizer Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer mixed to half its recommended strength with every other watering after the seedlings produce their first true leaves – the first pair of leaves after the initial seed leaves that emerge at germination. Water enough to keep the potting soil evenly moist, never letting it dry out or become waterlogged. Transplant the Seedlings Transplant the seedlings to separate 1-gallon containers filled with standard potting soil when they have at least three sets of leaves. Allow them to grow in a sheltered area for several weeks before transitioning them to their permanent outdoor location when all danger of frost has passed. Store Policies All seeds will come in a resalable plastic zip lock bag and placed in a bubble envelope so the seeds are not damaged by shipping machines. We only ship in the U.S.************* Please read full listing before purchasing ************* Description The tiny leaves have the characteristic rounded shape, with contrasting bands of maroon. Aw, shucks they’re cute! But the power — the thing that tells you spring is coming and gives you hope — is in the smell, that one-of-a-kind geranium fragrance. Even in the dead of winter, those tiny leaves smell like summer on the porch. Many gardeners know about starting geraniums from cuttings. It’s a great way to share treasured plants, and it feels thrifty. And gardeners love things that are thrifty. But if you start plants from seed, you get to choose from a range of colors: bright red, scarlet, bicolors, orange-salmon, coral, pink, white and lavender. And instead of feeling thrifty, you feel clever. What You Need Seeds: There is a wide selection available at garden centers and online. The key is to start early: You’ll need 12 to 16 weeks to get flowering plants. Some varieties come in to bloom faster than others, so check the seed packets. Pots and soil: Although you can start seeds in any container with good drainage and sterile “potting soil,” it’s a good idea to start with a multi-cell tray that’s designed for seed starting. “We use the GrowEase system and have had almost 100 percent germination,” Valerie says. “Of 200 seeds, only two failed to germinate. For potting soil, use a sterile mix, such as Seed Starting Mix. Light: Your seedlings will need light — lots of it. You can get pretty good results in a south-facing window, but it’s easier to ensure ideal growing conditions by growing the seedlings under lights. Fertilizer: Choose a water-soluble plant food, such as Plant Health Care for Seedlings/Houseplants. 1. Fill your pots or planting cells with moistened potting soil. The ideal size is about 2-3”. Eventually, you will have to “pot up” your seedlings. In other words, you will transplant them to a larger pot once they have about three sets of leaves and the roots have filled the starter pot. Although it might seem wise to start with a larger pot, it’s not. Seedlings seem to do better in close quarters. 2. Place one tiny seed in each pot and cover with a thin layer of moistened soil, just enough to cover the seed. Cover the pots with a piece of plastic wrap or — if you’re using a seed-starter — put the clear cover on top. 3. Place the whole setup in a place that’s warm, with bright, indirect light. Geranium seeds germinate best at 75 degrees F., so consider putting them on top of a refrigerator or using a Heat Mat. If the soil surface gets dry, use a mister to moisten it with water. 4. Watch for germination, which can take as few as three days or as long as four weeks. As soon as you see the first shoots of green, remove the covering and moisten the soil if it looks dry. 5. Move the tiny plants to a place that gets bright light, with temperatures in the 70s during the day and no lower than 60 degrees F. at night. Although you can grow them on a sunny, south-facing window, grow lights are best. Keep the bulbs no more than 6″ above the plants, adjusting as they grow. Leave the lights on for 12 to 16 hours a day. 6. Begin fertilization at this stage: once a week with liquid fertilizer that’s mixed at half strength. 7. When the plants have three sets of leaves, transplant them to a 3-1/2″ to 4″ pot. Self-watering Pop Out Pots work well, but you can use anything that’s about 4″. “This gives the roots more room to grow,” Valerie says. “Plus, you get more space between the plants, so air can circulate. Crowded plants are more susceptible to disease.” Don’t get thrifty by reusing old soil, which can harbor pests and disease. Use fresh potting soil, such as our Transplant Mix, which is sterile and drains freely. Continue fertilizing the seedlings, but mix it at full strength and apply it at the rate recommended on the package. “I like our Plant Health Care fertilizer,” Valerie says. 8. When frost-free weather arrives, it’s time to “harden off” the seedlings. Hardening off is simply acclimating plants to outdoor conditions. Seedlings grown indoors have been coddled — you’ve been giving them just the right amount of light, moisture and nutrients. Outdoor conditions are more challenging, with fluctuating temperatures and light levels, more variable soil moisture and wind. About a week before you plan to set the seedlings into the garden, start hardening them off. Place them in a protected spot outdoors (partly shaded, out of the wind) for a few hours, bringing them in at night. Gradually, over the course of a week to 10 days, expose them to more and more sunshine and wind.
