Best ornamental features are its attractive shape, exfoliating bark and fall color. Medium green trifoliate leaves (leaflets to 3″ long) turn vibrant shades of orange to red in autumn. Ash-brown bark exfoliates in vertical strips to reveal orange-brown inner bark. Greenish-yellow flowers appear in April in clusters of three, hence the species and common names. Trifolium pratense is a perennial that comes from the Fabaceae family. It is commonly known as Red Clover and it grows to 2 feet tall and wide. It is native to Europe, including Britain, from Norway south and east to Spain and W. Asia. You can find it flowering from May to September. This plant is pollinated by Bees, Moths & Butterflies.  It is not a frost-tender plant but it can fix Nitrogen in your soil. It likes to grow in full sun and can grow in most soils. The plant can tolerate strong winds but not maritime exposure. It is edible. Zones 5-9 Germination Mix seeds and soil and moisten the mix slightly in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 30 days. Seeds should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in a filtered light spot and kept moist. Clover plants will emerge 2 to 3 days after planting in temperatures of at least 75F.
